Journal Post #24 - OOTD and other events

Hey everybody!

It's nearing the end of another year, and it's been shockingly busy these past few months... don't expect it to ease up as I enter year 12. ; _ ; I have a ridiculous amount of products I was going to review but... uh... y-yeah... I will be attempting to go through them! ; u ;

So recently I went to watch the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who! It was quite wonderful :) I went with one of my friends, and my OOTD was Bad Wolf inspired:

accordion pleats, pleats, bad wolf, doctor who outfits, rose tyler outfits, owl necklace, cream heeled brogues, peter pan collar, latte coloured

I'm wearing: Indie brand dress, Yesstyle cream brogues, Equip necklace and bracelet, Rubi Shoes socks

tickets, 50th anniversary, doctor who, the day of the doctor

Tickets! [x]

I also recently won a mask and novel from Formula 10.0.6, which I will review after reading the novel :D

formula 10.0.6, lockwood and co, the screaming staircase, keep your cool mask, jonathan stroud

Formula 10.0.6 and novel [x]

In the last week of school, my group and I decided to do Kris Kringle. Our whole year also did these wonderful "warm and fuzzy notes", where we wrote sweet anons (or non-anon) to each other and put them in paper bags. I feel extremely loved.

paper bags, paper notes, activities with your year group, kris kringle style, anonymous compliments

cute notes, colourful, paper notes, written compliments, anonymous stuff

Warm and fuzzy notes [x] [x]

My friend got me Lovisa accessories and an amazingly adorable Nutcracker card! It looks gorgeous. :3

lovisa, yellow flowers, jewellery, nutcracker card, simple, ribbon, kris kringle, christmas presents

Kris Kringle gift [x]

Finally, yesterday I went to an event to assist in gift wrapping presents for the less fortunate. It was a rather humbling reminder of how some people face hardships such that gifts are a problem, and it was an honour to assist in wrapping toys and books for children of families (and cosmetics and such for older teens and adults) facing financial problems. I know a lot of people seem to think that "oh if you're poor, you shouldn't have nice things like toys etc" but that's truly an awful way to think, because all people deserve a reminder at Christmas that their lives matter, and that people do care for them. Haha went a bit social justice on you guys! But yeah, I truly believe that, and if any of you get the opportunity to assist your community in such a manner, take the chance! It's a great way to give back, or help others.

In other news, I've also watched season 1 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, started Charmed and am rewatching Primeval. I should be doing work. Or writing reviews. Ah.

Till next time!

Journal Post #23 - Haul and Halloween [InstaPost]

Hey everyone! Apologies for having not posted recently, am working to remedy that immediately! ^_^;; I've been swamped with work lately > A > Which is why it's been difficult to post reviews (which is what I really want to post!!) Anyhow, have an InstaPost :D

New Versace glasses! They're stunning black frames with hints of gold and are really flattering for my face shape! * u * Unfortunately the only downside is that the cloths for cleaning the glasses are not very useful, they actually smudge the glasses' lens :/ I'm not a fan of the case design, either. Other than that the box is pretty and the glasses are GORGEOUS!

One of my friends gave me a late birthday present, haha! I love it so much though! >u<!! (Body Shop fragrance, shower gel and moisturiser.) It's so pretty I don't want to touch it /slapped away/ Will definitely sample it though... am trying to use it as a bribery with myself. "If you do X amount of schoolwork... you may deserve to use some of it!!" Haha!

And my beautiful buys from She's Electric! Check out the store here! I'm loving their clothes at the moment but currently.... cashless. Haha! Wait... that's not something to be laughing about ; A ;!! I bought these gems during their anniversary sale, where everything already on sale was only $10 each!! Biggest bargain! Plus their clothes are SUCH good quality. I know that I'll be saving to buy from them more often ;) Already planning OOTDs with these items... watch out for when I post them! :D

Heads up!

Hi everybody, just a heads-up that I won't be posting for the next week. This is due to my English HSC (which I accelerate in) and then having to catch up on the year 11/12 work that I miss during that period. In addition, my phone has lost all connectivity to 3G so it's being fixed ; ^ ; Which means no instagram either!

Thank you for being patient, and hopefully I will be able to update ASAP! Till next time~

Wrap Skort [How do you wear it?]

Hello everyone!

Here's a trend I've noticed on Lookbook. Of course, don't forget that it's important to convey your own style no matter what trends are on at the moment, but I really like this trend, so I thought I'd share it with you, including other options and how to wear them~

What is it? I present to you... the skort!

Blog design change~

Hi everyone!

I changed the design of the blog again~ o uo I really wasn't fond of my previous banner, but I couldn't find the original picture that I wanted to use because my USB deleted it! (Grrr~) But thankfully, bored in Physics today, so I checked all the images I had on the laptop and I managed to find a back up! Yay!

My aim was to make the design of the blog look cleaner.

Let me know what you think ^0^

Also~ more reviews will be coming up after a week. I now better go off and prepare for tomorrow's exam o uo''

Journal post 21 - Outings and hauls (Pic heavy!)

Hi everyone~ I'm just going to do a quick recap of what I did over the holidays before I went back to school and some hauls /cryingforever

I had two more outings. The first was with some friends to celebrate another friend's birthday at an ice skating and had Max Brenner's afterward! It was delicious ^_^ I ate banana and choc crepes with ice cream and mint hot chocolate:

Huge revamp... and why?

Hey everyone! Just a heads up that I've changed the name and design of my blog completely, and hopefully for the last time. (No, you do not have to 'refollow', I am simply renaming the blog!)

Original URL and title: dailydoseofgenius.blogspot.com (Your daily dose of girl power)
New: sunlight--streaming.blogspot.com (the light that shone)

I guess it's only after I've been writing (for about a year) that I realised what my aim in blogging fashion and beauty was.

It was never about putting on a different appearance, or being different, or fitting into society's standards of beauty. It was always about having the real you still evident underneath. I just wasn't sure how to go about it.

And now I know. You can see from my fashion and makeup styles that most of it is minimal. And that's the style that I really truly enjoy. So without further ado, I present to you...

the light that shone
sunlight--streaming.blogspot.com
Fashion and beauty - trends, tips, recommendations and reviews, but natural, the way it should be

The reasoning behind my new name: In photography, light shouldn't overpower the photo, nor should it be devoid of proper lighting. Instead, there needs to be a proper balance to give the photo an organic feel, and it is this light that I hope to write with my blog.

Thanks for sticking with me for this long - and here's to a long future! :D

Note: I will also be tackling my banner and blog theme, however that will come within the next few days.

Till next time!

Journal post 20 - Day Out with friends

Wow, has it really been a month since my last update?! Ahhh... I bet you guys are thinking:

SHAME ON YOU SHAME ON YOUR FAMILY SHAME ON YOUR COW Mulan references for the win

But really, I have been busy out of my brain with schoolwork. :( Even now I'm working on a Chemistry assignment (shhh)

I also owe a lot of reviews -pokerface- I'll be writing them up soon, and scheduling them instead. 8)

Now let's start!

Before my friends and I met up, I bought some macarons to eat~ They're from Breadtop and the introductory special was $1 per macaron and for 10 macarons bought, 2 were given free!

With two of my close friends, I went to the CBD to eat and take purikura. That's pretty much all we did, but it was so much fun pulling silly expressions and editing random emoji and deco onto those images!

We ate at Ichiban Boshi, and had the most amazing melon soda drinks~

And then we took purikura! We spent two hours at the machines, and it was surprisingly tiring... Though that was probably because while editing, I was perched on the edge of the seat which was meant for two, not three people haha...

We also tried the claw machines which I failed at so I was pretty annoyed (luckily I only spent $2!)

I bought quite a few staple items from Dotti (lace tank, white tank, black tank) which in total was $20! And I went to Morning Glory to buy a notebook to stick all the purikura in. I also bought a mask~

What did I wear~?

I really like the houndstooth and red colour trends! So elegant and very fall ^_^ I also received my products from Sasa.com (two boxes of sheet masks and moisturiser~) which I will also review shortly.

So how's it been for you guys? ^_^ Busy? Fun? Let me know in the comments below! ^_^

Till next time~!

Finding the perfect foundation

Hello all! Of course, let it be known that when in doubt you should go to the sales assistant for a proper swatch test and so on, but you can't always do that for drugstore brands.

Anyways, I've been working on this post for a while so please bear with me! I have a whole series lined up, so before requesting, check out my "PAGES" widget and click on "Masterposts" on the right! ^_^

Before you go to the store:

- DON'T wear ANY makeup. Moisturiser is fine, but tinted moisturiser, BB cream, foundation and concealer are all not and might result in choosing a foundation that doesn't quite match.

- DO make sure you have plenty of time. The worst thing you can do is rush your testing and end up choosing a product that doesn't suit you.
Or time will screw you over...

- DO go with a close friend/relative who can give you an unbiased second opinion of what colour foundation works best. Of course, you don't have to, but it's great if someone does come.

So let's start!

The first thing is deciding what type of foundation you want. There are three main types: liquid, cream and powder.

Hello Flawless liquid foundation by Benefit

Liquid foundation gives light-to-medium coverage that looks very natural. It's usually set in with powder foundation. It's great for all skin types. The best way to apply (in my personal experience) is with your fingers or a sponge.

Revlon ColorStay whipped creme foundation

Cream foundation is a little heavier than liquid foundation, however allows your skin to look flawless. It is best suited for drier skin tones. The main disadvantages are that cream foundations can emphasise thin lines/wrinkles, and they don't have a long shelf life (if you use foundation rarely, it is likely to dry out when you come back to it).

Cream foundations are best applied with the above type of brushes.

L'oreal True Match powder foundation

Powder foundation comes in loose powder and compressed compact. Loose powder is sheerer and can be mixed with other powders, but both serve to set in makeup and/or be light coverage in their own right. They are best set in with a kabuki brush for loose powder and a powder brush for a compressed compact.

Other types (that I know of) include stick foundation (which is like a mix between concealer and foundation and is good for hiding acne scars), tinted moisturiser (great for brightening up skin without looking obvious) and BB cream. I don't really know much about BB cream, actually, but it is very similar to liquid foundation in coverage while being as sheer as a tinted moisturiser.

Now for trying the foundations on!
1. Choosing between brands is pretty much a personal preference and depends on a range of factors. Brands also work different for different people! However within a brand, they will have several lines of a particular foundation. To have an idea of what line you'd like, sample them on the back of your hand to decide one preferential texture and even get a vague idea of coverage.

2. Now to find what colour foundation works best! Use tiny dots of foundation to dab onto three/four different areas on your face (for example, several different shades on cheek, chin, forehead, nose). Compare colours first without blending in so you have a narrow range.

3. Now blend in the foundation with your fingertips. You may have to go back outside so you can see the effect in different lighting. Choose a foundation whose colour 'melts' into your skin - this will give the most precise shade!

4. And you're done! (Also it doesn't matter if a foundation does not give perfect coverage. It does depend on your skin type and what type of look you're aiming for, but that's what concealer is for~)

Hope that helps!

Sorry for not posting recently T.T I have been busy with literally an exam (or more) every week. Holidays start soon so all those reviews I need to write will be written then, and scheduled to be posted weekly~

Till next time!

Review post 18 - Sally Hansen nail polishes

Hi everyone, I think that posts will slow down to once a week/fortnight on Mondays~ ^0^ Because of school work /lies on floor... I know I have several reviews/tutorials promised (hair chalk, vintage choker, etc) however I will get them out ASAP >A<

Anyways, here's a review on Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear polish range! :)

I reviewed one of their polishes separately before, but now I'm reviewing them together because.... well, you'll see~!

So here are the colours I bought (psst I forgot to add watermarks, never mind me ;_;):

Colours from left to right are: Bamboo shoot, First Blush, Mellow Yellow, Green with Envy

What they look like with one layer of application:

Excuse my short nails ;_;

What I thought of them: I personally think that the lighter polishes are a little sheer, however they are great to test out shades against your skin due to the huge range of colours and the totally affordable price ($6.95 each here in Sydney, I think)! My favourite colour out of the polishes I bought still stands as Celeb City, and I think that the metallic colours for this polish range are the go-to colours. The polishes are quick to chip with two layers (around 5 to seven days), however if you apply a layer of the clear coating (Invisible) it becomes much more durable (two weeks!)

Overall, I would continue buying these polishes due to the great colour range and affordability. They are excellent as staples and if you don't wear polishes that often (nail polish is banned in my school! D':)

Review post #17 - Rimmel Hide the Blemish Concealer

Hello everyone! Sorry for not updating for a very long time! Anyways, I'm back with a review of Rimmel's Hide the Blemish concealer!

Packaging:

The concealer is a stick type and has three different shades. I bought it in the shade 'ivory'.

Swatch test:

 Not blended in

 Blended in

Opinion: This concealer is quite thick in texture, and so I wouldn't recommend for oily skin types. It also really emphasises any dry, flaky skin, so make sure you're properly moisturised before applying! It also barely covers acne and most blemishes, but you can get away with using it to cover lighter acne scars. I personally think that the best use for it is for dark circles and to highlight your face (while keeping it natural)!

This concealer is also pretty affordable, for only ~$AU11. Although it's not exactly a miracle concealer, it's great for light blemishes/scars/dark circles.

OOTD post 3 - Don't break me down

Hey guys! Today I went out with a few close friends to go shopping C: We hung out, went to Myer and tried some products, ate and really just enjoyed each others' company ^_^

I had this delicious choc chip waffle~ :'D Hmm I don't think I took any photos...

Anyhow, I recently got terribly sunburnt, so my next post will probably about dealing with sunburn...

This is what I wore~

More images:

Necklace went wrong way, sigh...

It was suddenly quite cool today... D: But at least it hid my sunburn! Hahah.

I bought 10 manga for $20, a guide for $8 and a book about terrible dates for $1. Hahahah! But yes, that was pretty much it :D

It was incredibly fun though, hadn't seen my friends all holidays T_T and school starts in three days... *shudders*

Till next time!

Dealing with monthly cycles

Hi! Sorry for not updating recently. This is possibly a little awkward and off topic for some of my male readers, so feel free to skip out! I'll go back to fashion and beauty next post but I thought that this might be helpful for some of you girls! (Because we all have these, right?!)

Truthfully, my period pains are not extremely painful for me (though there are times that I've had quite a bit of agony) and I think it's because I follow all the things that I normally do (that are listed below).

Remember though: If you have any abnormal flow or pains, go see a doctor! I am no medical expert and these 'remedies' will simply alleviate pains.

1. Cut out artificial sugars, fats and oils

While cutting these out WON'T make your pain go away and so on, just remember that artificial sugars, oils and fats can make you feel sluggish. As a result, your pain may be less tolerant of pain.

Though dark chocolate's great! :D

2. Exercise!

Exercising such as stretching and going out for a walk are also a great way to keep yourself energised and not grumpy so that the pain will be less tolerable. But keep it moderate! Strenuous activity will result in making you feel worse.

3. Yin and Yang

Some of you may have tried Eastern medicine, which are natural remedies that stem from the idea of yin and yang. While certain diseases are incurable by Eastern medicine, some minor injuries or illnesses can be alleviated naturally and slowly. Now, I don't think there is a medicine that will stop your pain (apart from painkillers, but they don't stop them :P) but applying such 'rules' to your diet may work.

The main concept I'll be talking about is that when you get your period, your body has an influx of yin. All foods and consumables are either yin or yang. To alleviate period pain, one should reduce the amount of Yin they consume (especially if your diet is more yin than yang.)

Foods to avoid throughout: Cold foods such as icecream and frozen stuff (yep it's pretty painful to do in summer) and shellfish.

Foods to avoid during heavier flows: Overly spicy, sour and bitter foods. Seafood is also best avoided, though salmon seems to be fine.

Foods that can help you feel better: Warm foods and drinks, ginger.

Just remember to keep a balanced diet - malnutrition will also contribute to lack of tolerance for the pain.

Oh, and you know how people say that a heat pack on your stomach feels great? They're actually unknowingly following these principles~ (And yes, heat packs are great on your stomach.)

This probably does sound a little wacky, but I think it really does work. You don't have to try it, though.

Yay soup!

So that's pretty much it! What are some things you guys do to alleviate pain (apart from painkillers)? Comment below ^_^

I'll continue with beauty and fashion posts soon, I've just been busy trying to finish off an essay for English D;

Till next time! ^0^

Journal Post 19 - Mini haul

Hello everyone <3 Just going to make a quick post on some bargains I nabbed~

Accessories from Equip - I bought all these for only $15!! :O

I've been lusting after a maxi skirt for ages. I bought one off Ebay (as it was recommended by one of my favourite bloggers) but the skirt turned out to be a salmon-ish pink and it reached mid-calf rather than my ankles... /first world problems... Anyhow, this skirt can be worn high waist and it'll still reach my ankles o3o)b And I only got it for $10!!

Also, the sleeveless blouse was bought for only $15. It has some leather details that are great for autumn~!

Both items of clothing are from SES, a super cheap chain retail in Australia that provides great staples.

Anyways, what are some great bargains you guys have been getting lately?

I'll also try to review some more products, and upload some makeup tutorials ~ Here's something else I've been doing lately:

Till next time!!
